Walking into a tailor shop for the first time can feel intimidating, especially in a city as famous for tailoring as Bangkok. Hundreds of shops line Sukhumvit, Silom and Siam, each promising the sharpest suit. For a first-time buyer, that abundance is the problem.
This guide walks you through what genuinely happens when you commission a custom suit in Bangkok. What you should expect, what you should ask, and how to tell a serious bespoke tailor from a tourist-focused shop that prints names on a template. It is written for buyers, not for the trade.
Louis Collections has been tailoring on Sukhumvit Road since 1985, dressing clients from every continent, and the answers below reflect what real first-time buyers ask us most often.
Before choosing cloth, understand what the cloth has to do. Nanaimo’s climate has four defining characteristics for wardrobe purposes:
The custom-made suits in Bangkok we recommend for a coastal maritime climate like Nanaimo’s lean toward a specific set of fabric characteristics: breathable, moisture-handling, structured enough to hold its line in damp air, warm enough for mild winter without being overbuilt.
A coastal climate rewards planned layering more than most climates do. The temperature range within a day is wide enough that one-piece dressing often leaves the wearer either too warm or not warm enough. The system that works:
Coastal climates are harder on tailoring than dry ones. The habits that keep a bespoke suit looking right across a Nanaimo year:
Louis Collections has been a bespoke tailoring house on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok since 1985. Four decades of continuous craft from the same workroom, drawing on Bangkok’s long-established fabric trade for fine wools, cottons and silks, and cutting every suit from an individual paper pattern drafted for that client.
To book an appointment for our next Nanaimo visit, or to request a trunk show in Nanaimo or elsewhere in Canada if the city is not currently on the schedule, see https://www.louiscollectionsbangkok.com/trunk-show/ or reach us on WhatsApp at +66 (0) 81 825 5590. Whether you are commissioning your first bespoke suit for Vancouver Island’s weather or continuing an existing bespoke relationship, we are glad to talk it through.
Mid-weight worsted wool (around 280-320 grams) is the reliable foundation — breathable, structured, works through most of the maritime climate. Add wool-cashmere blends for colder shoulder-season wear, high-twist wools for humid summer days, and flannel for the handful of genuinely cold winter days. Avoid very light tropical cloths — they feel thin in the coastal damp.
Nanaimo sits in a maritime climate that most of mainland Canada does not share — persistent cool damp, mild winters that rarely freeze hard, long shoulder seasons, variable weather within a single day. A suit cut for Calgary or Toronto winter is overbuilt for Nanaimo; a suit cut for Vancouver works well on the Island too.
A fine wool or cashmere knit under the jacket bridges most Nanaimo days. Add a waistcoat for formal settings (visible warmth without visible bulk), a proper overcoat for winter (not an outerwear jacket), and shirts in heavier cotton weaves (twill, poplin, Oxford) that handle damp better than lightweight weaves.
Hang on proper wooden hangers, allow 24 hours between wears for damp to leave the fibre, brush after every wear, steam rather than iron (ironing creates sheen on damp wool), store in well-ventilated spaces (not damp closets or basements), and rotate several suits rather than wearing one consecutively.
No. The entire process — consultation, fabric selection, fittings and delivery — can be completed through our visits to the region. Clients happening to travel to Bangkok are welcome at our workroom, but no visit is required at any stage.
You can book an appointment for our next Canadian visit through the trunk show page, or request a trunk show in Nanaimo or elsewhere in Canada if the city is not currently on the schedule. Louis Collections sends the traveling tailor on tour multiple times a year and can arrange trunk shows in cities not on the current list.
